The village of Kovanice is located on the left bank of the Elbe river, by road no. 38 between the towns of Nymburk and Poděbrady.
The first written mention of Kovanice is from the 13th century. In 1266, Sudomír "Zudoma" is mentioned here, and in the years 1318 to 1323, Bohuslav. Further reports are very fragmentary and come only from the second half of the 14th century.
