The originally Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque rebuilt church stands on the site of the former church of St. Cosmas and Damien, where Prince Wenceslas was murdered by his brother Boleslav. Basilica of St. Wenceslas was founded in 1039 by the Czech prince Břetislav I. According to Kosm's chronicle, he was consecrated on the 19th of V. 1046.
