On October 4, 1938, Karlovy Vary was occupied by the German army and, as part of the Sudeten County, annexed to the ?Third Reich?. On that day, Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler spoke to the fanatical crowds of Germans at Vřídel. Shortly before, the last Czechs left the city.
