In the ancient past, epidemics of plague, cholera, typhoid and other diseases were the terror of cities. The doctors were powerless, the people prayed and the toothy reaped. To ward off plague plagues, plague columns were built in squares, usually dedicated to the Virgin Mary or the Holy Trinity.
