It is located on the right bank of the Sázava on a prominent rocky headland, which is 100 m long and 80 m wide. It is surrounded by the river Sázava on one side and the Olešenský stream on the other. Originally, a wooden fortress stood here to protect the so-called Želivska route from Jihlava via Ledeč to Prague. In the first half of the 13th century, the first stone castle was built here.
