The founder of the arboretum in 1956 was Ing. Karel Kaňák, CSc. after the Czechoslovak Academy of Agricultural Sciences announced the task "Pine breeding". Since the previous experimental areas and objects were not enough for a serious solution to this task, he decided to establish a collection of the world's assortment of Pinus species at the Sofronk location in Pilsen - Bolevci.
