At the beginning of the 16th century, a settlement was founded by Štěpán Šlik. In 1520, the settlement was elevated to a free mining town, which was named after the Valley of St. Jáchym. The city was built around a road that ran through the valley and rose to the north. Among the first buildings that were built on the emerging square were the All Saints Church and the Town Hall.
