The Otava River is the third largest river in South Bohemia after the Vltava, which is a left-hand tributary, and the Luznica. It flows into the Vltava below the Zvíkov castle in the Orlické dam area.
Otava is formed by the confluence of the Křemelná and Vydra rivers near Čeňkova Pila in Šumava. The Vydra is considered the main spring branch, which originates as the Modravský stream at an altitude of around 1.200 m above sea level.
