The scattered village in the wide valley of the Svitavka stream was established in the 14th century on the way to Žitava. It is first mentioned in 1372 as Marzenic. The village was apparently named after the dedication of the recently repaired church of St. Mary Magdalene, standing on a hill in the middle of the village.
