Mountains and glass have always gone together. It had a quite logical reason. There was plenty of wood on the mountains, hence the source of energy needed to melt the quartz sand. Some kind of rock, i.e. sand, was actually also at hand, and since other raw materials are also added to glass (e.g. limestone), it can also be found in the mountains.
Glass belongs to relatively old human inventions, glass products appear in Egypt already...
