The village of Velké Hamry was created in 1914 by the merger of the settlements "Hoření Hamr" and "Dolení Hamr". In 1926, it was promoted to a city, and the status of a city was granted in 1968. The parts of the village are: Velké Hamry I with Svárov, Velké Hamry II (Hamrska) and Bohdalovice.
