The first mention of the settlement dates from 1361, and at that time it was part of the Opočen estate. At the beginning of the 15th century, the settlement was upgraded to a small town, and the small town did not receive its municipal title until 1914. In the second half of the 18th century, the Haugvics from Biskupice had a fortress built here. The remains of this fortress can still be seen in the city.
