There are three islets of Mesozoic Jurassic limestone on the southeastern edge of the city of Brno. The most morphologically significant is the Stránská skála (310 m). The rock outcrop is about 1,5 km long, 0,5 km wide and the thickness of the limestone here exceeds 80 m. The Stránská rock with its immense geological, paleontological, archaeological and botanical significance was declared a national natural monument in 1992.
