The observatory is built about three kilometers south of the outskirts of the city of Kladna on an inconspicuous hill, the wooded Kožová hora, 456 meters above sea level. The observatory, which was built at the initiative of the Club of Czech Tourists, was inaugurated on May 11, 1930. The observatory was built according to the project of architect Jaroslav Beránek.
