In the early 20th century, the demand to improve and cheapen shipping transport led to extensive modifications of waterways. The legal basis for these works was the Waterways Act No. 66 of 1901. In the same year, the Directorate for the Construction of Waterways was established at the Vienna Ministry of Trade. According to the Waterways Act, the Elbe should have started to be modified systematically from the mouth of the Vltava near Mělník upstream.…
