Lignite mining in northern Bohemia was often accompanied by tragic accidents. In March 1932, coal dust spontaneously ignited at the Kohinoor mine and a subsequent large fire killed 8 miners. On November 14, 1946, there was a release of natural gas in the mine and a subsequent explosion. The explosion killed 52 miners.
