The church is one of the oldest sacred monuments of the city. The first mention of the sanctuary dates from 1384. In 1567, the building was damaged by fire. What caused the destruction in 1607 is a mystery. Part of the vault and the top of the tower are said to have collapsed. In 1617, the church was repaired and the tower got an octagonal shape.
