Ostrava got its name from the river Ostravice, which divides the city into the Moravian and Silesian parts. The first settlement of this area dates back to the Stone Age. Mammoth hunters had their camps on Landek Hill. The oldest parts of Ostrava include Polská (today Silesian) Ostrava, which was mentioned as early as 1229.
