Nymburk was founded as a royal city around 1257 by Přemysl Otakar II. and was an important support of the royal power, which protected the access to Prague from the northeast through the Polaba plain. In 1310, it became a refuge for Eliška Přemyslovna (1292-1330), who hid from enemies here in the former house U černého orla. Under King Wenceslas II.
