Nové Hrady-residence (Old Castle)

The town of Nové Hrady in southern Bohemia, on the northern edge of the Nové Hrady Mountains near the border with Austria, was already mentioned in the 12th century. The castle, built on the foundations of an old fortified hillfort, is mentioned in 1279, when it guarded part of the southern border. Under the lords of Rožmberk, the castle was destroyed in 1573 by an explosion of gunpowder after being struck by lightning, and the destruction was completed in 1590 by an earthquake.
