In the 9th century, the territory of today's Nejdek played an important role as a fortress in the central part of the Great Moravian Empire, which protected the crossing from the south over the Dyji river into the interior. Its importance is also evidenced by the fact that the name of the later colonization village of Nejdek, founded around the 13th century not far from this castle, is based on the German name used for protective castles.
