What you can look forward to
Easter markets celebrate the arrival of spring in the Czech Republic. The most impressive markets are those in Prague.
During this period, the whole city lights up and the locals connect with tourists in a beautiful historical setting.
In the markets you can find wooden stalls, decorated with bright spring colors. In the stalls, you can see a lot of products from local craftsmen, which are made of glass, ceramics or wood. You will also find all kinds of jewelry, embroidered lace, toys, puppets in costumes and other products.
The most common item, however, is of course hand-painted Easter eggs, which are made of chicken eggs or wood.
Not only stalls full of souvenirs are an attraction. The markets are surrounded by beautifully blooming trees and decorated with colorful ribbons.
In the middle of the Old Town Square there is also a viewing bridge from which you can view the extensive market.
What you can enjoy
Visitors to Prague's Easter markets also have a range of local food and drinks available, most of which are prepared on the spot in front of shoppers.
Popular delicacies include grilled ham, grilled sausages, langoustines with garlic, cheese and ketchup, dumplings with smoked meat, dumplings filled with fruit and pancakes. You can also find cakes and other sweets here, such as trdelník or gingerbread.
To drink, you can buy tasty Czech beer, non-alcoholic lemonade, and if you're cold, you can enjoy mulled wine, grog, honey wine or hot chocolate.
Ecology in markets
The organizers of the markets also think about the environment, so drinks and food are served in dishes made of 100% biodegradable material.
Care is also taken to ensure that food and drink are locally sourced where possible. Wine and Czech meat used in sausages and hamburgers, for example, are from Rakvice, located in southern Moravia.
What can children look forward to?
In the market, music plays, songs are sung, and all this is accompanied by folk dances. In the later afternoons, school choirs and folklore ensembles in costumes perform on the Old Town Square, performed by children from all over the country.
At the markets, children can also feed live animals such as sheep, goats, donkeys or alpaca.
Children can also participate in Easter activities such as painting Easter eggs, flower pots, cutting ribbons, making Easter chickens, wicker baskets and pom poms.
Where to take the best photos
The markets offer several places from which you can take wonderful photos as a souvenir. The best place to take a photo is the observation tower on the Old Town Square, which can be accessed completely free of charge. Another place is the top of the tower of the Old Town Hall, where there is an entrance fee.
But you will take the best pictures right in the center of the action. That is, among the stalls and people, where you can capture the genuine Easter atmosphere.
