Both lakes were created by sand mining and the subsequent flooding of mining pits with water. In both lakes there is the possibility of swimming, fishing, camping, in Velký Písečák there is also surfing and yachting. Sailing sports and surfing are prohibited on Malé Písečák, and only non-motorized small vessels are allowed to sail on Velký Písečák.
