At the end of the 12th century, a Romanesque castle was built on a rocky promontory above the Elbe river, which was rebuilt into an early Baroque castle in the 17th century by Václav Eusebius from Lobkowicz. Prominent Italian architects, especially Antonio Porta, participated in the construction. The castle was the center of a prosperous estate and an important cultural center.
