Katowice lies on the left bank of the Otava River about 7 km west of the district town of Strakonice at an altitude of 412 m.
The history of Katowice dates back to the 11th century. At that time, there used to be a settlement established near the ford across the Ottawa. The first written mentions date back to 1318. In 1505, the village was upgraded to a small town, which in the seventeenth century became the property of the Klato Jesuits.
