Rock (or, if you prefer, stone) mushrooms arose as a result of erosion on different layers of sandstone with different resistance to external conditions (water, humidity, stronger temperature fluctuations around the freezing point in the ground air layers, ...). Of course, the harder and therefore more durable material is in the upper part of the mushroom, i.e. in its "hat".
