The oldest written report about the castle dates from 1222, when its administrator was Štěpán z Medlov, the ancestor of the lords of Perštejn. The name Dívčí hrad (or Děvičky, or Dívčí hrady) is derived from an old legend according to which virgins were walled into the walls to make the castle impregnable.
