The development of surface mining of brown coal between Chomutov and Litvínov created the problem of what to do with the streams that flow in this area from the Ore Mountains. It was therefore necessary to divert Šramnický and Albrechtický /Černický/ streams outside the mining area. That is why two tunnels were cut, which divert the waters of these streams along the slopes of the Ore Mountains to Horní Jiřetín.
