5 pearls among the castles and chateaux of the Karlovy Vary Region

It is true that if it is said Castles, many of us think of Červená Lhota, Karlštejn or Zvíkov, for example. But that certainly does not mean that we cannot come across interesting gems elsewhere. The Karlovy Vary region does not only offer a nice spa environment, but also a lot of buildings, belonging to the true pride of former noble owners.

There is a castle near Františkovy Lázně that was built in the twelfth century. The Seeberg is actually one big museum, it contains elements of the Romanesque and Gothic styles, it was opened to the public in modern history only after the reconstruction in 1990. The owners of the castle were, for example, the Šlik family or the Juncker family, is currently the property of the city of Chebu. You will also find an example of the period life in the countryside, rather than a classic castle, Seeberg is more of an open-air museum.

Founded already in the first half of the thirteenth century, the construction was decided by King Václav I. The castle, which is known throughout Europe, stands proudly above Ohří, it is also famous for the largest meteorite, which has ever landed on our territory (and is documented). This happened shortly after the period of the Hussite Wars, the meteorite was aptly named "The Cursed Burkrabi". There is only one of his pieces at Lokti, another is stored in Vienna, another in Prague. Loket also has a lot of interesting collections, in which a passionate history lover can wander all day...

The history of the castle in Cheb dates back to the twelfth century, and the important German Stauf dynasty was also behind its construction. It was Emperor Frederick Barbarossa who was behind the reconstruction, which has no parallel in Czech history. The so-called Black Tower, which is part of the fortifications or the castle chapel of Saints Erhard and Ursula, is really worth seeing. The colorful network of underground passages under the castle is the work of Emperor Ferdinand III. You can also admire the craft workshops here.

For sixteen years, the rare reliquary of Saint Mauro, the second most valuable monument of the Czech Republic made of solid gold, has been exhibited at the Bečov castle and chateau. In addition to the aforementioned reliquary, you can also view the interiors of the Baroque castle, including a large library and chapel. Another sightseeing circuit will give you a glimpse of life in a medieval castle and a modern castle.

5. Kynžvart Castle

Lock, which also owned the famous Metternich family, today belongs to the state. The baroque and classicist Kynžvart offers, for example, a huge library with twenty-four thousand volumes. There is also an extraordinary park with gazebos and ponds. By the way, the film If there were a thousand clarinets was also filmed here.

As you can see, Karlovy Vary and its surroundings will offer a lot of interesting things. Cheb shouldn't just be a stop on the way to Germany, visit it for at least one afternoon and you'll see that it's well worth repeating...
