5 most picturesque places in the historic city of Ústí nad Labem
Czech history was written right here! Ústí nad Labem is not only the center of its region, but also a great architectural monument. Over ninety thousand inhabitants, a large German-speaking population and several first-class buildings. Likewise, the place where the legendary Přemysl the Plowman supposedly lived. We will probably never know how it all really was, but there are indeed enough tangible traces of a rich history. So where do we start?
1. Větruše castle
Right here you will have the whole city literally in the palm of your hand. You will see Vetruš already from the train station. It stands on a nearby rock and is open all year round. The thirty-meter tower is a great lookout, you can also admire the mirror maze or the beautiful greenery all around. The social life really flourishes here, even small children are entertained. Vetruše has been a dominant feature of the Ústí region since the end of the nineteenth century!
2. Viewpoint Vysoký Ostrý
Do you want to enjoy the view of the Elbe? Then visit Střekov, from where you will be just a short distance to the wonderful viewpoint called Vysoký Ostrý. Altitude almost six hundred meters it attracted the first passionate tourists more than two centuries ago. The lookout point was reopened in 2014 after vandalism, so you have the unique opportunity to enjoy the view from the reconstructed viewing platform at the top, where only a tiny wooden lookout tower once stood...
3. Zubrnica museum railway
Velké Březno and railways definitely belong together! You can ride here from the end of March to the end of October, always during weekends and public holidays. The historic locomotive is a romance in itself, enjoy a stylish trip with your partner or children. In the former warehouse of goods at the railway station in Březno, you will find an extensive museum exhibition documenting the history of the local railway - well, such a sweet candy at the end!
4. Ústí nad Labem Zoo
You must not miss this place if you want to take a trip with children. One of the largest Czech ZOO offers over a thousand different animals, the area of twenty-six hectares is fully utilized. Orangutan, lion or sea lion and zebra, there is also an extensive children's ZOO or Lumpepark, an educational trail for lovers of all things winged.
5. Střekov Castle
A view of the whole of Ústí near the banks of the Elbe? You don't have to go to the lookout tower, it's there too seven centuries old roost Strekov, whose founder was the famous Jan Luxemburgský. The hundred-meter rock, about three kilometers from the center of Ústí nad Labem, also hosted Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War. Karl Hynek Mách or Richard Wagner. So why not you too?
